One of the characteristic trademarks of my interior design is the use of organic, natural and earthy elements that reflect my love of nature. A favorite way to bring that element into a home is using minerals or fossils as accent pieces, they instantly bring a story, a unique piece that no one else has, and a history to a room.

A fun way to bring stone into a room that might not ordinarily seem like a logical choice is to use minerals as an accent. The variety of stones that lend themselves to home accessories is amazing- quartz, amethyst, citrine, calcite, jade, pyrite (otherwise known as fool’s gold), desert rose, geodes, selenite and many more.

In addition to natural minerals, fossils make a very interesting and unique accent that can be a conversation piece. Large ammonites (nautilus-like creatures that lived for millions of years through the Cretaceous period) can be quite impressive when displayed on a stand and viewed from all angles.

Large fossil slabs have been used as “art”, a school of fish, swimming forever in tandem and installed in a stone wall, for instance is impressive and awe-inspiring. Ancient plants captured in a slab of limestone is a piece of natural art like no other, and needs nothing else.

Large minerals, such as citrine and amethyst, can be used simply as decorative pieces, or as functional furnishings as this citrine table base beautifully demonstrates. The sparkly nature of minerals makes them particularly attractive when lit to advantage- making them into a lamp is a natural (no pun intended) progression.

We resource our minerals from all over the world and love to use them to create a special design accent for our clients. Minerals and fossils have a built-in story to tell and lend a personal touch to your home that is unlike any other decorative accessory. While large fossils can be quite pricey, many smaller fossils and mineral specimens are quite budget friendly. We’d be happy to help you find the perfect piece for your home.
